The word "grocery" has a rich history connected to trade. In earlier centuries, a "grocer" was a merchant who dealt in goods sold in large amounts, linked to the idea of selling "in gross." Later, the word became associated with shopkeepers who sold dry goods such as sugar, tea, spices, pepper, and dried fruit. Those goods were called "groceries." Over time, the meaning grew and came to include many of the food and household items people buy in a modern store.

Today, "grocery" most commonly refers to food and other basic items we buy for the home, such as fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, cleaning products, and toiletries. You will often hear it in everyday phrases like "grocery store," "grocery list," "grocery bill," and "grocery shopping." In natural use, English speakers very often use the plural form, "groceries," when talking about the items themselves: "I bought groceries," "The groceries are in the car," or "We need groceries for the week."

The singular form also appears before another noun, which is why we say "grocery store" or "grocery bag." In some varieties of English, people may say phrases like "do the groceries," but in many places "go grocery shopping" sounds more natural. The word is tied to ordinary life: planning meals, checking the kitchen, making a list, and buying what a household needs. Whether someone says "grocery store," "supermarket," or simply "the store," the idea is usually the same: a place where people buy the food and basic supplies they need.
