Gossip is informal talk or rumors about the personal lives of others. It's more than just sharing news; it often involves details that are private, sensitive, or even untrue. While casual conversation about mutual acquaintances is common, gossip typically carries a negative connotation—suggesting indiscretion and a lack of respect for privacy.

Gossip can range from harmless chatter ("Did you hear Sarah got a new puppy?") to malicious rumors intended to damage someone's reputation ("I heard John is being laid off"). It often thrives in environments where trust is low or people feel insecure. The word itself comes from the Old English godsib, meaning a "god-relative" or "godparent." Originally, it described a close, trusted friend—someone you would naturally share news with. Ironically, what started as a term for spiritual fellowship evolved to describe something often unkind and untrustworthy. So, while sharing information isn't inherently bad, remember that responsible communication respects boundaries and avoids spreading unverified claims—leaving the gossip behind!
