The word "glare" has two main meanings, and both involve strong intensity that often feels unpleasant. First, it describes an angry or hostile look: a fixed, intense stare that shows anger or disapproval. To glare at someone is to look at them with a fierce expression. For example: "She glared at him for interrupting her," or "The teacher gave the disruptive student a stern glare."

Second, "glare" refers to an intensely bright light that is hard to look at directly. This often happens when light reflects off a smooth surface like water, snow, ice, or glass. Think of driving toward the setting sun and being blinded by its glare. You might say: "The sunlight created a harsh glare on the road," or "He shielded his eyes from the glare."

Interestingly, both meanings share a sense of something forceful and hard to ignore. An angry glare hits you with emotional intensity, while a bright glare overwhelms your vision. You will also encounter the related adjective, glaring. While it can describe something very bright, it is more often used for something that is obviously wrong or noticeable, such as a "glaring error" or a "glaring omission." So whether it is the heat of an angry look, the brightness of reflected light, or an obvious mistake, "glare" always suggests something strong and difficult to ignore.
