It powers many everyday vehicles, especially cars and motorcycles, and in American English it is often shortened to "gas," while in British English the usual word is "petrol." For many people, it is part of ordinary life: a stop at the pump, a glance at fuel prices, or the familiar smell around a filling station.

The word became common in the 19th century as petroleum refining grew into a major industry. As cars became more common, this fuel became one of the main ways to power them because it stores a lot of energy in a small amount of liquid. Inside the engine, it mixes with air and is lit by a spark. That controlled burning creates the force that helps move the vehicle. Modern gasoline is usually a blend of different hydrocarbons, and it may include additives that help engines run better, protect engine parts, or lower some emissions. Although the word is mostly used for vehicle fuel, it can also appear in discussions about refining, fuel quality, energy use, and pollution. Its widespread use has brought major environmental concerns because burning it releases greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the air. That is one reason many countries and industries are investing in alternatives such as electricity, hydrogen, and biofuels. So while gasoline may seem like a simple everyday liquid, the word carries ideas about transport, industry, cost, and the changing future of energy.
