foot

B1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈʊt/

US

  • /ˈfʊt/

Description

We all stand on our feet, the parts at the ends of our legs that help us walk, run, jump, and dance. That is the main meaning of "foot," but it is not the only one. It can also mean the bottom part of something, as in "the foot of the mountain," or a unit of length, as in "six feet tall."

The word also shows up in a few other common ways. A bed can have feet, a poem can have feet that give it rhythm, and a person can "set foot" in a place by going there. It is a simple word, but it reaches into daily life, measurement, and even writing.
