filter

B1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈɪltə/

US

  • /ˈfɪltər/

Description

Imagine pouring coffee grounds into hot water: a filter keeps the grounds out of your cup. That's one way to think about "filter." But it is much more than something you use for liquids. A filter can be anything that separates things, whether in a physical way or in your mind. Social media platforms filter what content you see, and our brains filter out unimportant information all the time. You might even say a good friend filters your bad ideas before you act on them.

The word's roots go back to Medieval Latin, where it referred to felt or cloth used for straining liquids. Now it is also about selection: choosing what gets through and what does not. A clogged filter needs cleaning, just like a mind full of information might need some quiet time to sort things out.
