filler

A1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈɪlə/

US

  • /ˈfɪlər/

Description

A "filler" is something used to take up space, add bulk, or cover a gap. It can be a substance used to patch a hole in a wall, cheap material added to a product to make it go further, or little sounds like "um" and "uh" that give you time to think while speaking. People also use the word for extra scenes, text, or episodes that are there mainly to pad something out, and for cosmetic injections that fill lines in the face. Sometimes it serves a real purpose, and sometimes it just feels unnecessary.
