Fascism is a far-right political ideology built around dictatorial rule, extreme nationalism, central control, militarism, and the violent suppression of opposition. It emerged in early 20th-century Europe as a reaction against liberalism, democracy, and communism. The term comes from the Italian word fascio, meaning "bundle" or "group," and refers to the fasces, a Roman symbol of power and authority.

At its core, fascism puts the state and the nation above everything else. Individual rights are treated as less important than what the rulers say the nation needs. It promotes a strong sense of national unity, often through propaganda, censorship, and the silencing of dissenting voices. Fascist regimes typically glorify violence, war, and military strength as ways to achieve national greatness. They also tend to be strongly hierarchical, claiming that some people or groups are naturally meant to dominate others.

Historically, the most prominent examples include Benito Mussolini's Italy (1922–1943) and Adolf Hitler's Germany (1933–1945). These regimes were marked by extreme nationalism, aggressive expansionism, and horrific human rights abuses.

Today, the term "fascist" is often used, sometimes too loosely, to describe people or groups with authoritarian ideas, extreme nationalist views, or open contempt for democracy. However, simply being conservative or having strong opinions does not make someone fascist. The word refers to a specific and extreme ideology with a clear historical pattern: total control, violent repression, and the demand that the nation or state come before individual freedom.
