Extremism refers to political, social, or religious ideas that lie far outside what a society sees as acceptable, especially when they reject compromise, pluralism, or the rights of others. The word often carries a negative sense because it suggests more than simply having strong beliefs; it points to rigid, intolerant, or fanatical views, and in many cases to support for drastic or violent action.

The core idea is an unwavering attachment to one ideology or cause, often combined with deep hostility toward opposing views. This can lead people to divide the world into "us" and "them," treating outsiders as threats, enemies, or less worthy of respect. It is not simply a matter of caring deeply about an issue. A person can be passionate, outspoken, and firmly committed without crossing into this territory. The line is usually crossed when belief turns into intolerance, dehumanization, or approval of coercion and violence.

Historically, extremism has fueled conflict and violence in many parts of the world. It can appear in very different forms, including violent nationalist movements, white supremacist groups, militant religious organizations, or revolutionary groups that justify terror, persecution, or attacks on civilians. In everyday use, the word is especially common in discussions of security, politics, and social conflict.

At the same time, the word should be used carefully. Because ideas about what counts as "extreme" can vary across cultures and periods, the label can be subjective or political. Even so, the usual meaning is clear: it describes beliefs or movements that go far beyond ordinary disagreement and move toward intolerance, hatred, or the justification of severe harm. Understanding that distinction helps separate strong conviction from a mindset that threatens open and peaceful society.
