execrable

Execrable describes something extremely bad, hateful, or deserving of strong condemnation. It is much stronger than simply saying "bad" or "terrible." The word often suggests not only poor quality but also deep disapproval. A review might call a play execrable if it is painfully badly written, badly acted, and hard to sit through. A person might call an act of cruelty execrable because it seems morally awful, not just unpleasant.

The word comes from a Latin idea connected with cursing something, and that old force still lingers in its modern use. Because of that, execrable often sounds formal, serious, or dramatic. It works well for things that feel shockingly bad: corrupt behavior, cruel treatment, gross incompetence, or a piece of work so poor that it seems almost offensive.

You would usually not choose execrable for mild problems. A slightly boring book, an average sandwich, or a rainy afternoon would normally not be called execrable. The word is better saved for the worst cases, when you want to show that something is not merely disappointing but truly awful and worthy of blame.
