Essentially, it describes something that has gone wrong in the process of normal development or growth. While it is almost exclusively used in a medical context, its core meaning relates to any flawed or abnormal formation.

In medicine, "dysplasia" refers to abnormal development. At the cellular level, it often means that cells in a tissue look abnormal in their structure, size, or arrangement. These changes are not the same as cancer, but in some settings they may be linked to a higher risk of cancer and may need follow-up. This is often found during screening or biopsy reports. For instance, a doctor might identify "dysplastic nevi" (atypical moles), which are watched for changes in shape or color. The severity of dysplasia is often graded as mild, moderate, or severe to show how far the cells have moved away from their usual healthy appearance.

Beyond the cellular level, the term can also describe larger body structures that have formed abnormally, such as in hip dysplasia, where the joint does not develop in the usual way. In practice, the word is strongly tied to medical use rather than everyday metaphor.
