However, while metaplasia is initially a protective mechanism, it is not without risk. The new cell types may not perform the original tissue's functions effectively—such as clearing mucus in the respiratory tract—and the constant state of stress-induced change can make the area more susceptible to genetic mutations. Over time, metaplasia can progress to dysplasia and eventually cancer.
