Dysplasia describes the disordered growth and development of cells or tissues. It is not cancer itself, but rather a condition where cells lose their normal shape, size, and organization. Think of a perfectly tiled floor—dysplasia would be like having some tiles that are slightly cracked, uneven, or out of place. While the floor is still functional, those imperfections could eventually lead to bigger issues if left unaddressed.

The term "dysplasia" carries different nuances depending on the context. In pathology, it often refers to abnormal cellular changes that may be graded as mild, moderate, or severe. You might hear about "cervical dysplasia," where cells on the cervix look abnormal, or "dysplastic nevi," which are unusual moles that may deserve closer attention. These changes are not the same as cancer, but some forms can increase the risk of cancer, so doctors may monitor them or treat them early.

Beyond the microscopic level, dysplasia also refers to structural malformations in the body. One of the most common examples is "hip dysplasia," a condition where the hip joint does not develop correctly, so the ball and socket do not fit together as they should. This can affect humans and is also frequently discussed in veterinary medicine.
