Imagine a jeweler pulling a piece of gold into a fine, shimmering wire. That is ductility in action. It describes a material that can be stretched or drawn out without breaking. Gold is a famous example, but copper and some other metals are also very ductile. We usually use the word for metals, though some plastics can show this quality too. Glass, by contrast, is not ductile because it tends to snap or shatter instead of stretching.
Ductility refers to a material's ability to deform under tensile stress, meaning it can be stretched into a wire without fracturing. It is an important property in engineering and manufacturing. Think about the copper wires running through your walls: their ductility allows them to be drawn out, pulled through tight spaces, and bent during installation without breaking.
The term comes from the Latin word ductilis, meaning "capable of being drawn out." It is most often used for metals such as gold, silver, copper, and some kinds of steel. These materials can be shaped by pulling rather than snapping. Some polymers and other materials can also show a degree of ductility under the right conditions, such as higher temperatures.
However, ductility is not the same as malleability, even though the two ideas are related. Malleability is the ability to be hammered or pressed into thin sheets, while ductility is about being stretched into wires. Gold is unusual because it has both of these qualities to a very high degree.
The word is mainly used in materials science, but it can sometimes be used figuratively for someone or something that adapts without cracking under pressure. Even then, the core idea stays the same: the ability to bend, stretch, or change shape without breaking.
