A doorjamb is one of the vertical side pieces of a door frame. It is the upright part that helps support the door and gives the hinges, latch, or strike plate a solid place to attach. It is more than trim around an opening; it helps keep the door lined up so it can open, shut, and lock as it should. In older buildings, these pieces were often made from solid wood and fitted with care to keep out drafts and add security.

People sometimes use the word loosely for the frame around a door, but in careful use it usually means the side jamb, not the top piece, which is called the head jamb. A poorly installed or damaged one can cause all sorts of problems: a door that sticks, will not latch properly, or lets in air and noise. Carpenters spend a lot of time making sure these upright frame pieces are plumb and square so the door moves smoothly.

Beyond its practical function, a doorjamb can carry memories. It might have pencil marks showing a child's height over the years, dents from moving furniture, or a worn patch where many hands have brushed past. In stories, a person standing in a doorway can suggest a pause between one place and another, between safety and risk, or between staying and leaving. So the word names a simple part of a building, but it often brings to mind the everyday life that passes through a home.
