A jamb is primarily the vertical side-post of a doorway, window, or fireplace opening. It is the sturdy structural element that supports the frame and provides the surface for the door or window to close against. In a doorway, the hinges are typically attached to one jamb, while the "strike plate" (where the latch clicks in) is attached to the other.

The term has stayed closely tied to architecture. While it is most commonly associated with doors and windows today, it is also used for the vertical sides of a fireplace opening, and in some technical settings it can describe similar upright supporting parts. Unlike a "lintel," which is the horizontal beam across the top, a jamb is the vertical component.

In everyday use, you might hear someone say, "The painter carefully trimmed around the door jamb," or "He leaned against the kitchen door jamb, waiting for his coffee." The word is mostly practical rather than figurative, and it usually appears when someone is talking about building parts, repairs, or the shape of an opening.
