The word comes from the French word jambe, meaning "leg," which fits nicely when you picture these parts as the legs a doorway stands on. A jamb is primarily the vertical side-post of a doorway, window, or fireplace opening. It is the sturdy structural element that supports the frame and provides the surface for the door or window to close against. In a doorway, the hinges are typically attached to one jamb, while the "strike plate" (where the latch clicks in) is attached to the other.

Unlike a "lintel," which is the horizontal beam across the top, a jamb is the vertical component.
