To dominate is to exert strong authority or control over someone or something. It goes beyond simply influencing; it implies a level of power where others are largely subject to your will, influence, or strength. Historically, empires dominated vast territories, imposing their laws and culture on conquered peoples. This sense of strong control remains central to the word's meaning.
