It describes something becoming stretched or swollen from pressure within, like your stomach after a big holiday meal or a blood vessel under strain. It mostly refers to physical changes, but it can sometimes be used in a non-physical way, too.

Distension isn't always comfortable! It's different from simply growing bigger; distension implies being pushed and stretched from the inside. A doctor might note abdominal distension, meaning your belly is swollen and tight. Now and then, writers use the word in a loose, non-physical way for something that feels "swollen" or overblown—like an ego, a rumor, or a story stretched too far.

Distension (also commonly spelled distention) refers to the state of being stretched beyond normal limits, typically by pressure from within. Think of a balloon filled with too much air—it stretches outward, becoming taut and potentially fragile. That's distension in action.

In medical contexts, distension frequently refers to the enlargement of an organ or body part due to gas, fluid, or a solid mass. For example, abdominal distension can be caused by bloating, constipation, or more serious underlying conditions. A doctor might observe "esophageal distension" during an examination, indicating that the esophagus is abnormally stretched.

Distension isn't limited to medical talk, though. In a broader (and less common) figurative sense, it can suggest something being overinflated or stretched beyond what feels natural: a distension of pride, an overlong argument, or a situation that has been pushed too far.

Historically, the word could also be used more generally for "stretching out" or "extension." This older sense is less common today, but it still points to the same core idea: being pushed beyond a normal limit.

So whether it's a swollen organ, an enlarged belly, or pride that has been inflated too far, distension describes a state of being expanded and strained—often reaching a point where further stretching becomes difficult or even dangerous.
