Disfavor describes a state of disapproval, dislike, or loss of support from someone (or from a group). It's more than just not being liked—it implies an active sense of displeasure and often carries the weight of consequences. Think of it as being on someone's "bad side."

Historically, it was frequently used in royal courts to describe a loss of standing with the king or queen. A courtier who fell into the monarch's disfavor might be banished from court, stripped of titles, or even imprisoned. You'll often see this "in disfavor" idea in older writing about rulers, courts, and politics.
