To discredit means to harm the reputation of someone or something, causing others to doubt their truthfulness, reliability, or validity. It's more than just disagreeing; it involves actively working to undermine confidence in a person, idea, or claim.

Think about a rumor spreading about a local business. If people start believing the rumor and stop shopping there, the business has been discredited—its reputation damaged. Or consider a historical account that's challenged by new archaeological findings. The discoveries might discredit the original story, making historians question its accuracy.

Discredit can be used as a verb ("The newspaper article attempted to discredit the mayor") or a noun ("The scandal brought widespread discredit on the administration"). It often implies an intentional effort to damage someone's standing—perhaps through spreading false information, revealing embarrassing details, or presenting evidence that contradicts their claims.

However, something can also be discredited unintentionally. A faulty product, for example, might discredit the company that made it simply by failing to perform as expected.

So whether deliberate or accidental, to discredit is to erode trust and damage a reputation, leaving doubt in its wake. It's about losing credibility—and once lost, it can be very difficult to regain.
