  • /ˈdɪfrəns/

Description

Difference describes how things are not alike. It's the quality that sets one thing apart from another. You might notice a difference in taste between an apple and an orange, or a difference in opinion between you and your friend. Sometimes differences are small, barely noticeable; other times they're huge! Think of the contrast between a tiny ant and a towering elephant—quite a big difference indeed! You can also say something "makes a difference" when it changes the result or helps. And if you say, "It makes no difference," you mean it doesn't matter. While the word is a noun, it often follows verbs of perception, such as in questions like "What's the difference?" or "Can you tell the difference?"
