To contrast means to compare two or more things in order to highlight their differences. It is about identifying what sets them apart, often to emphasize a particular quality, effect, or theme. The word functions as both a verb ("The author contrasted the hero's bravery with the villain's cowardice") and a noun ("The stark contrast between rich and poor was unsettling").

Contrast is more than just acknowledging a simple difference; it implies a significant degree of divergence, enough to be striking to the observer. While a subtle shade variation might not create much contrast, placing bright red against deep blue certainly will!
