To denature means to change something so it loses its natural qualities, often by heat or chemicals. While commonly associated with science—particularly biology and chemistry—the concept extends beyond the lab.

In a biological context, denaturing usually refers to proteins (and sometimes DNA or RNA) losing their normal structure and, therefore, their function. This can be caused by heat, acids, bases, or other disruptive forces. Think of an enzyme, a protein that speeds up chemical reactions in your body. If you denature it, it loses its specific structure and can no longer perform its job effectively. This is why very high fevers or overheating can be dangerous—they can damage essential proteins your body needs.

However, denaturing isn't always about accidental destruction; sometimes it's a deliberate process. For example, toxic or foul-tasting substances are often added to ethanol for industrial use to "denature" it. This makes the alcohol unfit for human consumption, allowing it to be sold for cleaning or fuel without being subject to the heavy taxes placed on drinkable spirits.

Figuratively, denature can mean to corrupt or degrade something, stripping away its original purity or character. You might say that excessive commercialization has denatured a once-authentic cultural festival, leaving it a hollow version of its former self. So, whether you're talking about proteins losing their shape, alcohol becoming undrinkable, or the corruption of a tradition, to denature is to fundamentally alter something's natural state—often with significant consequences.
