To daub something means to apply a substance—such as paint, clay, mud, grease, or ointment—in a rough, uneven, or casual way. It often suggests thick, patchy coverage, and it can hint that the job was done without much care or polish (though in art it can also be a deliberate technique for building texture). For example: "The children daubed their faces with mud before the game," or "She daubed ointment on the burn." The word works as both a verb and a noun: a "daub" can be a smear or a lump of the substance itself (for instance, a daub of paint).

Historically, "daub" was also a specific building material: a mixture of mud, clay, and straw used to seal walls in rustic homes (often described in the phrase "wattle and daub"). This meaning brings to mind simple, practical construction rather than fine architecture. But the term isn't limited to physical materials; it also has a figurative use. To "daub someone with praise" means to cover them in compliments—so many, and so heavily, that it can feel overdone or insincere.

Similarly, "daub" can describe the act of concealing or "painting over" flaws. Shakespeare famously used the word to describe hypocrisy—the act of covering one's true nature with a superficial layer of virtue. In Richard III, for instance, a character is described as having "daub'd his vice with show of virtue." Whether you are literally applying plaster to a wall or figuratively masking an imperfection, to daub is to cover something with a substance in a heavy and often imperfect manner. It is less about artistry and more about coverage and concealment.
