Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are either produced naturally in the adrenal cortex (the outer layer of the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys) or synthesized artificially as medicines. They play a vital role in regulating many bodily functions, including metabolism, immune response, and the stress response. When used as medicines, they mimic the effects of cortisol—your body's primary stress hormone—but are often delivered at much higher doses to achieve a therapeutic effect.

Anabolic steroids are associated with muscle building and athletic performance enhancement, while corticosteroids primarily target inflammation and immune function. While both are powerful substances, they have very different uses and impacts on the body.
