Immunosuppression refers to a reduced ability of the immune system to work as it should. It affects how well your body can defend itself against harmful organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and it can also weaken the body's ability to notice and fight some abnormal cells.

There are several ways this can happen. It can result from an infection such as HIV, which damages important immune cells. It can also appear because of poor nutrition, certain medical conditions, or medicines such as chemotherapy drugs and corticosteroids.

In medical settings, doctors often intentionally cause immunosuppression to help with life-saving treatment. For example, after an organ transplant, the body may see the new organ as foreign and try to attack it. By using immunosuppressant drugs, doctors reduce that reaction so the transplant has a better chance to succeed. The trade-off is that the patient becomes more vulnerable to opportunistic infections, which are infections that usually do not cause serious problems in people with healthy immune systems.

Signs of immunosuppression can be mild at first, such as frequent colds, slow-healing wounds, or repeated infections. In more serious cases, it can lead to severe illness. Understanding the cause is important for proper treatment and care, which may include changing medicines, treating the underlying illness, improving nutrition, and close medical monitoring while the body's natural defenses are reduced.
