Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, are medicines used to reduce inflammation and to calm an overactive immune system. Doctors prescribe them for conditions like asthma, arthritis, allergies, eczema, and autoimmune diseases. These drugs can be very effective, but long-term or heavy use may cause side effects such as weight gain, weaker bones, higher blood sugar, or a greater risk of infection.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic forms of testosterone or closely related substances. They may be used in medicine for certain hormone problems, delayed puberty, or diseases that cause muscle loss. However, they are widely known for non-medical use by athletes and bodybuilders who want more muscle, strength, or faster recovery. This kind of use can improve performance in the short term, but it also raises the risk of serious harm.

Possible harms from anabolic steroid misuse include heart and liver problems, hormonal imbalance, mood changes, acne, infertility, and other physical and mental effects. Because of these dangers, many sports organizations ban their non-medical use, and many countries regulate them closely.

So the idea behind steroids is not simply "muscle-building drugs." The term includes natural body chemicals, prescription medicines, and synthetic substances that can be abused. They can be essential and helpful when used properly, but harmful when misunderstood or misused.
