The word "contractor" has two main meanings, both revolving around formal agreements and specialized work. Traditionally, a contractor is a person or company that enters into a formal agreement—a contract—to provide goods or services, most commonly in the construction industry. This could be a general contractor overseeing the building of a skyscraper, a plumbing contractor installing pipes, or an electrical contractor wiring a new office. Depending on the job, they may manage the whole project, hire subcontractors (other specialized workers), and make sure the work follows the plan and local building codes.

However, in the modern economy, "contractor" also refers to anyone who works on a contract basis, meaning they are not a permanent staff member. This is increasingly common across many professional fields. A freelance graphic designer, an independent IT consultant, or even a specialized researcher could all be considered contractors. They are hired for specific tasks or projects and are paid upon completion or at an hourly rate without receiving the typical benefits of a full-time employee.

Think of it this way: if you bring someone onto your staff as an employee, they are part of the organization. If you pay someone to deliver a specific result under a contract, they are likely a contractor. In private security or military settings, "contractors" can refer to outside workers hired for specific missions—independent experts brought in for their skills. So, whether they are building a home or writing software, a contractor is someone who works under a specific agreement and is not a traditional, long-term employee.
