The word "contract" primarily refers to a legally binding agreement between two or more parties that creates obligations enforceable by law. While we often picture lengthy documents with fine print, a contract can be verbal—though written versions are always preferable for clarity and proof. They range from simple store purchases to complex employment agreements, detailing specific terms regarding what is promised, when, and how. The key elements of a valid legal contract usually include an offer, acceptance, consideration (an exchange of value), and a serious intent to be bound by the deal.

But "contract" also works as a verb in the legal and business sense: to contract can mean to enter into an agreement, or to arrange for work or services under agreed terms (for example, to contract for repairs). In everyday writing, it can even mean to shorten words by combining them, as in contracting "do not" to "don't."

In a physical sense, to contract means to become smaller or tighter. You see this when your pupils contract in bright light or when materials shrink as they lose heat. In a medical context, "contract" describes the act of acquiring a disease or infection.

Historically, the word comes from the Latin contrahere, meaning "to draw together." This root perfectly captures all its meanings: a legal contract draws people together in agreement, a muscle contracts by drawing its fibers together, and you contract an illness by "drawing" a virus into your system. Note that the pronunciation often shifts; we usually stress the first syllable for the noun (CON-tract) and the second syllable for the verb (con-TRACT).
