To confirm means to make something certain: you verify that it is true, correct, or really happening. It goes beyond simply believing something; confirmation can come from checking facts, finding evidence, getting a direct statement, or receiving official approval. For example: "The lab results confirmed the presence of the virus," "Please confirm your email address," or "She called the hotel to confirm her booking."

Confirmation can take many forms. A text message confirming an appointment is a simple instance. But it also applies to more complex situations: scientists confirm ideas through experiments, lawyers confirm facts through evidence presented in court, and a senate or board may confirm a nominee or decision, making it official and final.

The word often implies removing doubt or uncertainty. If you suspect your friend is sick, but they confirm it by telling you directly, that removes the guesswork. It can also mean to strengthen a belief: "His success confirmed her faith in his abilities."

In everyday language, we use "confirm" frequently when dealing with plans and arrangements. But its roots lie in the idea of making something firm and secure—literally firming up the truth. In some Christian traditions, "Confirmation" is also the name of a church ceremony that formally admits or strengthens a person in the faith.
