The word comes from the Old French complainte, meaning "lamentation" or "wail." So whether it's a simple grumble, a medical symptom, or a formal accusation, at its heart, a complaint is about expressing something that's wrong, unfair, or unsatisfactory—a desire for things to be better. It's a way of saying, "This isn't right, and I want it addressed."
