cocksucker

noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /kˈɒksʌkə/

US

  • /ˈkɑkˌsəkər/

Description

This word is an extremely vulgar, deeply offensive insult. Literally, it refers to a person who performs oral sex on a penis, but in everyday speech it is far more often used as a dehumanizing put-down (roughly “contemptible person”) hurled in anger or contempt. It is frequently aimed at men and used to shame, intimidate, or “emasculate,” drawing on sexist ideas about dominance, submission, and what counts as “manly.” Because of that, it is also commonly used with homophobic intent or overtones, even when the speaker is not making a literal claim about anyone’s sexuality. Outside of sexually explicit contexts, it is generally treated as unacceptable and is likely to cause serious offense.
