The word "class" has several distinct meanings, making it a fascinating example of linguistic flexibility. Most commonly, "class" refers to education: it can mean a group of students ("The third-grade class went on a field trip"), or a scheduled period of instruction ("I have class at 10"). It can also refer to a cohort connected by a time or institution ("the graduating class of 2026").

Beyond school, "class" often means a category or type. We talk about classes of vehicles (sports cars, trucks, etc.), classes of products, and formal labels like "a Class A fire hazard". In travel and services, it can name a level of service—economy class, business class, first class—each with different standards and perks.

In society, "class" can refer to social and economic groups, such as the working class or upper class, often shaped by income, education, and occupation. And in a more personal, informal sense, "class" can mean quality, excellence, or style. Something described as "first-class" is considered superior ("The hotel provided first-class service"). Saying a person "has class" suggests poise, good taste, and respectful manners.

You may also see "class" used in technical or formal systems: in biology, a class is a taxonomic rank (for example, Mammalia), and in computing, a class is a template for making objects. As a verb, "to class" means to place something into a category ("The hotel is classed as five-star"). So, whether referring to education, social groups, categories, or standards, "class" is a word for organizing how we think about people and things.
