To classify means to arrange things systematically into different categories or classes based on shared characteristics. It's more than just sorting; it involves applying a system of organization and understanding the criteria for each group. For example, biologists classify living organisms into kingdoms, phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species – a hierarchical system that reflects evolutionary relationships.

But you don't need to be a scientist to classify! We do it all the time in everyday life. You might classify your emails as "urgent," "important," or "junk." A museum curator classifies artifacts by historical period and cultural origin. Even deciding what clothes are "clean" versus "dirty" is a form of classification.

The word comes from the Latin classis, meaning "group" or "rank." It implies a level of analysis and judgment – you're not just randomly grouping things, but making informed decisions about where each item belongs.

There’s also an official, security-related meaning: to classify a report, file, or piece of information is to give it a formal secrecy level (for example, confidential, secret, or top secret), which limits who is allowed to see it.

Sometimes, classifying can be subjective. What one person considers "good music" another might classify as "noise." But in many fields, like science or library science, classification systems are standardized to ensure consistency and clarity. So whether you're organizing your sock drawer or unraveling the mysteries of the universe, classification is a fundamental process for making sense of the world around us.
