A chain refers to a series of connected things, either physically linked together or related by a sequence of events. The most familiar image is a metal chain—a row of interconnected links used for binding, securing, or pulling. For example: "The dog was tied with a heavy chain," or "The ship's anchor held firm thanks to its strong chain."

However, "chain" extends far beyond physical objects. It can describe any connected sequence. A chain of events might lead to an unexpected result, much like one small decision triggering a series of consequences. You could say, "One small error set off a chain reaction of problems."

The word also carries significant metaphorical weight. To be "in chains" suggests being restricted or controlled—either literally, like a prisoner, or figuratively, by debt, addiction, or obligation. A chain of command describes a hierarchical structure where authority flows from the top down.

As a verb, to chain means to fasten or restrict with such links ("The bike was chained to the rack") or to connect things together ("They chained the boats side by side"). In science, a "chain reaction" is one reaction that triggers another; in everyday speech, people sometimes use it more loosely for a fast-spreading sequence of effects.

In a modern context, we also use the term to describe business networks, such as a "supply chain" involved in production, or a "retail chain" where multiple stores operate under the same brand. Chains can be practical, symbolic, and even decorative—like jewelry worn around the neck. Whether it is a physical link, a sequence of events, or a sign of restriction, a chain represents connection, consequence, and sometimes, control.
