In many armed forces it sits above colonel and below major general, and in some systems it is equivalent to a brigadier general, the first one-star general officer rank. The term comes from older French military usage and points to the idea of a brigade leader. In day-to-day stories and reports, it usually describes a seasoned commander responsible for directing thousands of troops and major tactical decisions.
