The word bourgeois has a layered history rooted in medieval Europe, and it came into English through French. It derives from bourg (a town), and originally referred to townspeople—bourgeois in French, or burghers in English—especially merchants and skilled tradespeople who formed the commercial core of early urban life.

Over time, the meaning widened. By the 18th and 19th centuries, bourgeois often referred to the established middle class: property owners, professionals, and financiers who gained influence through trade and industry. At this point, the term began to carry moral expectations too—respectability, prudent spending, disciplined work, and attention to social standing.

The word took on sharper criticism in political writing. Marx used bourgeoisie to name the ruling class in capitalist society—those who owned capital and hired wage laborers. In that tradition, bourgeois became shorthand for a worldview that prioritizes profit and stability, values hierarchy, and often resists revolutionary change.

Today, the word is versatile. It can still be neutral when referring to class background or lifestyle, but it is frequently loaded with criticism when it implies conformity, social climbing, or a narrow preoccupation with comfort and appearance. You can describe a taste as "bourgeois" if it feels predictable and respectable to a fault. A "bourgeois lifestyle" usually suggests security and aspiration, sometimes at the cost of risk, creativity, or social critique. In conversation, the term is often used to poke fun at, or criticize, middle-class pretensions. In short, it remains a sharp social label tied to class, values, and power.
