To be "bossy" means to behave in a domineering or controlling way, frequently giving orders and expecting obedience. It is more than simply being a leader; it implies an unpleasant assertion of authority, often without regard for the feelings or autonomy of others.

The word carries a negative connotation--no one wants to be described as bossy. While strong leadership involves guiding and motivating a team, bossiness focuses on dictating and controlling. A bossy person might say things like "You should do it this way," or "Don't even think about doing that," without offering an explanation or allowing for any input.

Context matters when using this word. Sometimes a child is labeled "bossy" simply because they are assertive and take initiative, but true bossiness involves a pattern of overriding others' ideas and sidelining their opinions.
