To be beleaguered means to be troubled or harassed persistently; to be under attack, either literally or figuratively. The word comes from the Dutch belegeren, meaning "to besiege"—essentially surrounding a place with a camp of hostile forces to cut it off. While it originally referred to military sieges (think of ancient fortresses surrounded by enemy camps), beleaguered now most often describes situations where someone is overwhelmed by difficulties, problems, or criticisms.

A beleaguered city might be cut off from supplies during a war. A beleaguered employee might face constant criticism from their boss alongside an impossible workload. A witness in court might feel beleaguered by relentless and aggressive questioning. The key element is the sense of being persistently harassed or burdened—worn down by ongoing hardship.
