A bedroom is the room in a home mainly used for sleeping. It is usually where people rest and recharge, and often a place to be by yourself. Beyond sleep, it can also be used for reading, getting dressed, or working, depending on habits and the layout of the house. Most bedrooms hold a bed, bedding, and storage, with the room shaped by the occupant's tastes and needs.

While the basic meaning is a room for sleeping, the term also appears in hotels, dormitories, and apartments to describe any room set aside as a sleeping space.

The word "bedroom" refers to a room designed for sleeping and privacy. In most homes it is not just a place to lie down; it is often a personal retreat used for unwinding, daydreaming, dressing, reading, or sometimes working from home.

Historically, people did not always have separate sleeping rooms. In earlier times, families often shared sleeping spaces in communal rooms, but as houses became more private and larger, dedicated bedrooms became the norm. Today many include en-suite bathrooms, walk-in closets, or small seating areas, and they are often decorated to reflect an individual identity.

The term is also used in housing language to distinguish types of rooms—"guest bedroom," "master bedroom," "ensuite bedroom," or "shared bedroom"—and in non-residential contexts like hotels and hostels where a room is used mainly for rest. So while a bedroom is technically a room with a bed, it also carries a strong emotional meaning as a quiet and restorative place associated with comfort, safety, and being yourself.
