To bawl means to cry loudly and uncontrollably, often expressing deep sorrow, pain, or frustration. It's more intense than simply shedding a few tears; it suggests a complete loss of composure and an outpouring of emotion. Think of the sound as a raw, unrestrained, heartbreaking wail.

The origins of the word are somewhat murky, but it is thought to be imitative of loud animal vocalizations—much like the lowing of a cow or the bleating of a sheep—hence the connection to loud, uncontrolled human sounds.

While often associated with sadness, bawling can also occur in moments of extreme joy or relief. A parent might bawl when their child graduates, overwhelmed with pride and happiness. It's the intensity of the emotion that defines the word, not necessarily the nature of the feeling.

Interestingly, "to bawl someone out" is a completely different usage! This means to scold or reprimand someone severely. "My mom really bawled me out for staying up so late." In this case, bawl doesn't relate to crying at all; it means shouting angrily or bellowing at someone.

So, whether it is a heartbroken sob or a furious reprimand, bawl is a powerful word that conveys strong emotion and, almost always, a great deal of noise.
