A baptistery is a building or dedicated space within a church specifically designed for the administration of the sacrament of baptism. Historically, particularly in early Christian architecture, baptisteries were frequently standalone buildings, often octagonal in shape to symbolize completeness and eternity. These structures weren't just functional; they were richly decorated with mosaics, sculptures, and other artwork depicting biblical scenes related to water, purification, and new life—visually reinforcing the spiritual significance of the rite.

The central feature of a baptistery is usually its font: a large basin or pool holding water used for immersion or aspersion (sprinkling) during the ceremony. Early Christian texts describe elaborate rituals performed within these spaces, often involving processions, prayers, and anointing with oils.
