babble

To babble means to talk rapidly and continuously, but in a way that's difficult or impossible to understand. It's often associated with babies learning to speak, as they experiment with sounds and syllables before forming coherent words – "The baby lay in her crib, happily babbling to herself." However, adults can also babble!

When an adult babbles, it usually implies their speech is confused, rambling, or lacking clear thought. Perhaps someone overwhelmed by excitement might babble about their good news, or a witness disoriented after an accident could babble incoherently to first responders. It can also suggest triviality – "They spent the afternoon babbling about celebrity gossip."

The word isn't limited to human speech, though! "Babble" can describe a pleasant, murmuring sound made by water. A brook might babble over stones, creating a soothing melody. This usage evokes the same sense of continuous, somewhat indistinct sound as with spoken language.

Historically, "babble" emerged in Middle English and is believed to be imitative in origin, mimicking the repetitive "ba-ba" sounds made by an infant. So, whether it's a baby discovering their voice, a rushing stream, or someone lost in thought – to babble is to produce a flow of sounds that are more about the act of making noise than conveying a clear, specific meaning.
