"Aye" is a traditional English way of saying "yes" with a bit of character. It is common in formal or parliamentary contexts, where "aye" is used as the supporting vote and may be reported as "the ayes have it." In Scotland and parts of Northern England, it is a normal conversational word for agreement. In nautical use, "aye" and especially "aye aye" signal acknowledgment and assent, as in "Aye, aye, sir." It is less common in standard modern American conversation but still very much used for regional, maritime, or historical style.

The word has a long history in English and is still heard today, especially in places where formal procedure or regional tradition keep it active. In parliamentary language, "aye" is the direct affirmative used during votes, and the result may be summarized as "the ayes and the noes."

Outside formal chambers, "aye" is a regular form of agreement in Scots and parts of Northern England, often simply replacing "yes." It may sound old-fashioned to other speakers, but it is still a natural everyday term in those varieties. In seafaring settings, "aye aye" is especially distinctive because it does more than agree: it confirms the order has been heard and is accepted for action.
