answerable

A1
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈɑːnsərəbəl/

US

  • /ˈænsərəbəl/

Description

Something that's answerable can be capable of receiving a reply, but in many contexts it also implies responsibility. Being answerable to someone means you are expected to explain your actions and take ownership, much like an employee is answerable to their boss. Being answerable for something implies liability; a ship's captain, for example, is answerable for the safety of the crew. Beyond duty, the word has a simpler application: it describes something that can be answered. A factual question is usually answerable, whereas a philosophical riddle might not be.
