We often think of animals as furry friends like dogs and cats, but the word "animal" is broader than that. In biology, it refers to living creatures in the kingdom Animalia—from tiny insects to giant whales (and humans, too). In everyday speech, though, we usually mean nonhuman animals. Animals need to eat to survive, are mobile at least at some point in their life cycle, and reproduce. Think of a bustling rainforest—it's teeming with animal life! Sometimes "animal" is used informally to describe someone behaving in a wild or instinctual way—"He was acting like an animal!"

The word "animal" comes from the Latin anima, meaning "breath" or "soul," and refers to any living organism belonging to the kingdom Animalia. This is a vast group, far beyond just pets and zoo creatures! It includes everything from tiny invertebrates like worms to enormous mammals like elephants.

What unites all animals? They are multicellular (made of many cells), heterotrophic (meaning they obtain nutrition by consuming other organisms—unlike plants, which make their own food!), generally mobile at some point in their life cycle, and reproduce sexually or asexually.

The term "animal" can be used scientifically to classify living things—biologists study animal behavior, anatomy, and evolution. But it also has everyday uses. We might talk about "farm animals," "wild animals," or even use the word metaphorically. For example, someone described as an "animal" might be energetic, passionate, or driven by instinct. You could even describe a savvy politician as a "political animal," meaning they are innately competitive and thrive in that environment.

Historically, the distinction between humans and animals has been debated—but scientifically, we are animals too! Specifically, mammals within the primate order. So next time you see a squirrel scampering up a tree or a bird soaring through the sky, remember that you're observing one of the incredible creatures that make up the animal kingdom—a kingdom to which you also belong.
