amply

C1
adverb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈæmpli/

US

  • /ˈæmpli/

Description

If something is provided amply, it is given in generous amounts—more than enough! Think of a bountiful harvest that leaves a family amply supplied for the winter, or a teacher who explains a concept amply so that all students understand. It suggests fullness and abundance. You wouldn't usually say you "amply" tripped over something; the word points to sufficiency and plenty, not random accidents.

The word is closely related to ample (and to amplitude), all carrying the sense of largeness or plenty. So, when something is done amply, it is done with plenty of room to spare, leaving no doubt about its sufficiency. A skilled storyteller might describe a scene amply, with vivid details that paint a complete picture for the listener.
