The word comes from the Latin agere, meaning "to do" or "to act," suggesting an actor does something with their performance. You might say someone is "quite an actor" if they're skilled at putting on a show or deceiving others, or that a massive corporation is a major actor in the global economy.

The word "actor" most commonly refers to a person whose profession is acting—portraying characters in plays, films, television shows, or other performance media. They use their skills in voice, movement, and emotional expression to bring those characters to life for an audience. Think of Meryl Streep embodying Margaret Thatcher, or Robert Downey Jr. becoming Tony Stark; these are examples of skilled actors at work.
