Description

To act can mean many things! At its simplest, it means to do something—like acting on an impulse or acting quickly in an emergency. But we also think of acting when someone pretends to be another person, performing a role on stage or in a movie. A good actor acts the part convincingly. The word can even describe how things function or have an effect: chemicals can act on other substances, and medicine can act as a pain reliever. So, whether it’s taking action, playing a character, behaving a certain way, or describing how one thing influences another, this little word is surprisingly versatile.
