ace

The word "ace" has a fascinating range of meanings, many of them tied to the idea of “one” and, by extension, being the best. In cards, an ace is the card marked with a single symbol (and in many games it can rank either low or high). In dice, an ace is the side with one pip.

But "ace" quickly moved beyond gaming. It's used to describe someone exceptionally skilled at a particular activity. A fighter pilot who shoots down five or more enemy aircraft is an "ace." In sports like baseball, the "ace" refers specifically to the best pitcher on a team, relied upon for success. In tennis, however, an "ace" is a specific power move: a serve that lands in the box and is so fast the opponent cannot even touch it.

You can also use "ace" as a verb. If you study hard, you can "ace" an exam or an interview—meaning you do extremely well, often with a perfect or near-perfect result.

Finally, "ace" can work as an adjective (especially in British English) to mean excellent or first-rate: "That was an ace performance!" or "She's got an ace sense of style." In some modern contexts, "ace" is also used as a shortened form of "asexual." Whether you're dealing cards, admiring skill, praising quality, or using it as an identity label, "ace" points to a clear, memorable idea—and it usually implies something (or someone) worth noticing.
